Petroleum products are substances derived from crude oil through processing in oil refineries. Unlike petrochemicals, which consist of well-defined, typically pure chemical compounds, petroleum products are complex mixtures. The majority of crude oil is refined into various petroleum products, encompassing multiple fuel categories.
Depending on the crude oil composition and market demand, refineries adjust the proportions of petroleum products they produce. The largest portion of these products serves as energy carriers, including various grades of fuel oil and gasoline. These fuels encompass or can be blended into gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, heating oil, and heavier fuel oils. The heavier, less volatile fractions are utilized to manufacture asphalt, tar, paraffin wax, lubricants, and other heavy oils. Additionally, refineries produce chemicals used in manufacturing plastics and other valuable materials. Since crude oil often contains sulfur compounds, elemental sulfur is frequently recovered as a petroleum product. Other byproducts include carbon in the form of petroleum coke and hydrogen. The hydrogen generated is commonly employed as an intermediate in refinery processes such as hydrocracking and hydrodesulfurization.
